I think that implants can be safe if made from saline. My mother had Dow silicone implants since 1969 and had them removed 1 year ago due to pain and disfiguration and suspicion of cancer. When the surgeon went in to remove her breasts, both implants had been torn and ruptured. Her health has been deteriorating for many years, but doctors now won't admit or deny that it has been caused by her ruptured implants. I feel that 90% of her illnesses and pain have been caused by this, but we have not been able to find a doctor that deals with these problems. If anyone out there has any suggestions, please let me know. I hope that women will take a long hard look at the issues involved here before altering their breast, even if it is medically necessary.

comments = I feel that the harmful effects of breast implantation should be made known to the public, especially to men, who are encouraging their girlfriends and such to get them. They obviously don't know the effects or they wouldn't be offering to have the person whom they care about get nasty oozing shit for breasts.
thankyou.

comments = I feel very strongly after loosing 3 members of our support group in Fla. that the companies,FDA, and surgeons they implanted these toxic devices should be held accountable for murder. I feel there is no difference between taking a loaded gun and killing them then the tragedy we are forced to live with daily. Unfortunately I am to ill to continue to run the support groups and fight with the FDA but would love to correspond with other silicone sisters in the country. I am enclosing my e-mail address so we can communicate. I also am on chemo therapy for lupus, scleroderma and am having some fairly good results. I also have been taking propulsid and prilosec with excellant results on the gi tract. I have found absolutely no pain medication that works and gave up trying. I am willing to sure all the info I have obtained over the years and on various medications that I have tried and the results. All we can do is hope and pray that someone will someday come up with a way to cleanse our bodies of these toxic substances. Thanks and best of luck.
Judy

They are a terrible product whose marketers capitalize on the insecurities of woman who have been made to feel inferior because they don't look like they've stepped out of PLAYBOY!

>comments = Women should be discouraged from having ANY form of implant as they are not safe. I had silicone for thirteen years and both had ruptured. No-one told me that they had a limited life span or that they contained a lethal chemical cocktail which would be absorbed into my body. I am totally digusted at the medical professions unwillingness to verify what many know to be true - we are sick and they know it. Until some decent doctor stands up with irrefutable proof that we are ill with atypical diseases then we are stick with being labelled neurotic idiots. The manufacturers have a lot to answer for and one day they will. >

I was interested in getting breast implants, but after reading the information I realize that my health is not worth it. In the back of my mind I still consider getting breast implants, but deep inside I know I wouldn't. I am interested in getting more information. I would not like my information made public..

comments = As I have previously said, this is the worst disaster on the human life since the Vietnam War. We women have been mentally and physically raped by this disease and the manufacturers, especially Dow! I have been sick for over 10 years, and I had the junkiest, dirtiest, Dow implants inserted into my body in 1975. I was a nurse, had a mastectomy, and I believed in our FDA, our doctors, and that we were protected from product problems. I and countless other women were fed lie after lie! I live in a small town, where I grew up, and am now 50 years old, and cannot be treated at the hospital where I once worked as a nurse. All due to the bad publicity, and the cover-up by Dow. I truly believe that all the men involved in making these implants, all the executives, their lawyers, etc. should agree to let me inject 40cc. of this very toxic silicone into their bodies, I really don't care where,( but I could think of some great areas) and then Mr. Hotshot, you must leave them in for 7 years, no matter how sick you get. Then you must beg someone to help you because you want them out yet you can't afford the surgery. Then your wife leaves you because you can no longer work, and you feel so bad that your a bore to be around, and guess what? Everyone thinks your crazy! Now the place in your anatomy that I was thinking of injecting this toxic silicone into you is a place that has deformed you so that you no longer feel like a man, and can't function as one either, so now your wife is GONE! You now lose your job, your nerves are shot, you can't even open a beer bottle! You are trying desperately to get your social security disability and they are taking their own sweet time. Meanwhile medical bills are piling up, you loose your house, you start selling your gold, jewelry, furniture, sell your car(and settle for just wheels to get to the Dr. and back). You can't sleep at night, you have pain in all parts of your body, you have to go through painful neurological testing to determine how much silicone is in your bra!

in. People look at you like you did this just to look better, they tell you that no one would put silicone into your body if it wasn't safe. You see all they have to read and see on TV. is what YOU PAID TO BE SAID OR PRINTED. You LOSE, AND YOU ARE GOING TO DIE FROM YOUR CRUEL GREEDY, GAME. When this 40 cc. of silicone that I have in my body, finally does enough damage to cause my death, I know where I am going for eternity because I am a Christian and I will be in heaven with all my other silicone sisters and children. But God already has a plan for you and it won't be in heaven! You have mutilated, maimed, and yes killed us women and now children. You don't mess with God's handiwork. May God have mercy on your evil, greedy, lying soul!!!

comments = I had Dow Corning imparts put in in 1974. I was a healthy 32 yr. old woman who just wanted to look my best. 4 years later I had colon cancer and I've had Systemic Lupus since. I have had 12 surgeries for various adhesions and nerve entrapment. I had the implants removed in 1994. Up until that time no one would admit it could be the implants causing any problems. I must take Prednisone and Plaquenil, plus many other drugs and narcotic painkillers every day. If I had only been given even SOME of the facts, I would have never even considered these terrible products. It was indeed a tragedy and a con job on American women.

I would greatly appreciated some more info. regarding this particular type of implant. Are they really all that harmless? I also was reading about the procedure and it seems "do-able" He does comment on encapsulation by fibrous tissue which may shrink causing the prostheses to feel hard, What are the chances of this actually happening? Thankyou to who ever replies, it is much appreciated. Carmen!

My biggest complaint of this whole mess is "informed consent". We should have been informed as to what possible/probable debilitating effecting silicone implants would have on our bodies before we made the decision to have them. Thanks for listening

I am trying to prove that i had dow and do not know how to do that. I don't know how many other women out there have this problem. I would like to hear from someone that may have any info that would help me. For years I have been ill. For years I was told it was all in my head. In 1993 I had them replaced with silicone[I know] the m.d. had to scrape with hands ,etc. to collect all the spilled silicone. I certainly would not have replaced them had I been awake to see that The info at that time was scarce and I trusted the m. d. afterall it was always in my head.Thank you any help would be appreciated.

comments = I had mastectomies at the age of 29. I thought that implants were a God send. Now I feel like an idiot. I have been very ill for over four years. Wish that someone would believe us so we could get the funding for research to find a way to get better. At the age of forty, and once being a workaholic and owning my own business, its a hard pill to swallow that my main goal now would to be to be able to hold my three month old granddaughter pain free! Just so I could fully enjoy her.

I know that there are so many of "us" that are worse off than me. But I see a drastic change from year to year. The others that I have talked with have told me that it took anywhere from three to five years to feel better after explantation. Well, it's been four years for me and I have gotten progressively worse. But through talking to others, and reading all of the newer reports that are out, we (myself and family) have come to the conclusion that even though I have had my silicone implants removed, I did have them replaced with saline. Now we have come to learn that the envelope holding the saline gel is made of silicone, and over time the envelope will break down and fragements will migrate through the body. Which would certainly explain why I have continued to worsen, when I should have been getting better. So ladies, if you are considering saline implants, please do not trust your doctor. Just read the new abstracts and other reports, and I do believe you will make your own conclusion.

My mastectomies were a very serious operation. But I must tell you that the explantation was much more severe, and took much longer to recover from. You loose feeling and cant wash or feed yourself for quite awhile. You will loose muscle, lymphnodes, breast tissue (if you have any), and they must remove the capsule. The recovery is unbelievably painful. Now I have to go through this again. I am scared to death! If you feel that it is worth going through this sever operation over and over again, then by all means, have the implants put in. You have so much to look forward too!

Thank you for the opportunity to spout off.

Best wishes,

Lori

comments = I think they are a lot like cigarettes (many hidden agendas)! My mother has had 3 surgeries and is again having numerous health problems. Her plastic surgeon told her that they need to come out right away because they have ruptured and formed capsules. Here's the catch...insurance covers nothing...she does not qualify for a payment plan...she does not have thousands and thousands of dollars sitting in the bank. Are there any options out there for women suffering?

Please e-mail any advice and (or) options. We are in California, but I am sure that we could travel if needed. She really needs to get them removed right away (per her doctor). Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! My e-mail address is: amber@sure.net

comments = Good Job! We support what you are doing. A minor technical point that you may wish to consider. Under your home page, you list dichloromethan (spelling is dichloromethane) and methylene chloride. The inference is that methylene chloride and dichloromethan are different compounds. In fact, the compounds are one in the same. Therefore, you may wish to consider consolidating your points under METHYLENE CHLORIDE (aka. dichloromethane).
Best of luck.

My medical bills are astronomical and insurance companies are refusing to pay. My medical bills total to well over $200,000 in the last 11 years since my implantation. The only doctors that I saw prior to implantation were gynecologists for my pregnancies and routine family care. If only I could communicate this to young girls that want to have a "perfect figure". I don't begrudge them perfection, this is simply not the way to obtain it.

comments = I am eighteen years old and I strongly desire to have breast implants. I made my mind up ever since I was thirteen. I've asked a few doctors and they said I was too young to have this procedure done, but I just turned 18 and I still desire this operation. My breasts are pretty much the same size they were in 7th grade (34A) and it is very depressing to me. I can't stand the thought of never being able to fill out a dress properly or wear an unpadded bra. Not having "normal - sized" breasts has killed every bit of self-esteem I have. What else can I do, but desire to get implants?

I was told by the doctor, who put the implants in, that a mack truck could run over me, my body would be smashed and the implants would still be there unharmed. For the pass year. I have had a rash appear on the left breast and has been there ever since I have seen doctors and I have been treated by them and nothing will help the rash, and they do not know the unknown reason for the rash being there and not being able to cure the rash. All I have heard is that the rash is from a reaction.

comments = I had my Bristol Myers Implants removed two years ago this month (April). I had a mastopexy to reconstruct my breast and fill in the holes that were to be left after the "old ruptures" were removed. Cost $14,000! Scares -- actully not bad I had a wonderful plastic surgeon, Dr. Vitale-Lewis, Melbourne, FL, SHE did an excellent job on me. Even though my breast as considerably smaller, they are firm and both head in the same direction. I feel the best I have felt in 18 years. One of my implants was so badly decomposed, the pathologiest could not determine the size. Having silicon inplants was the biggest mistake I have ever made in my 49 years of life. 6 years after my implants, I went through 3 of the worst/sickest years of my life, however no one ever suspected the implants. Through the news media, I was able to put together I suffered from silicon poisoning. I had every symptom, including 2 years of cronic fatigue syndrome. My famaily doctor dismissed my concerns, saying it was just coincidence. My implants were beautiful. I suggested to my docotor that maybe I should have them removed. He strongly disagreed with me. Against his advise I went to a plastic surgeon. She sent me to have an MRI on my breast -- My worst fears were confirmed. Rupture. No mistake about it. I immediately set up a date to have the implants removed. I have to say now that my health is fantastic. I guess I will always have the allergies I developed 10 years ago. I have also lost the hearing in my right ear due to the constant ringing the allergies have caused. But -- I am healthy, alive and free of the implants. The thing that makes me so mad is that I was lied to! If I had known for one second the implants could affect my life in such a negative way I would have never ever had the surgery. I truly believe that the implanting doctor told me exactly what she knew. I specifically asked with if they burst ): Well it's behind me now. I can sleep at night. I wonder if those bastards at Dow can! By the way I received $23,000 from the MDL settlement. At least I was able to finish paying off the hospital bill. Bristol didn't totally turn their backs on us like Dow did. I really feel sorry for the ladies who had Dow implants -- in more ways than one. This whole thing is nothing more to Dow than just a game to see just how much they can get away with. To all you ladies with Dow -- My heart goes out to you.

>comments = I received silicone gel breast implants in 1974. Over the years since then, I have had numerous and varied illnesses. The doctors I saw didn't know what was wrong with me. They would try to deal with each new ailment or symptom and get me back on my feet until the next problem would emerge. I went from doctor to doctor, specialist to specialist as different areas of my body were affected. In 1992, I read articles about other women who were describing almost the same experience. I was so sick and felt so much older than my years. I had the implants removed in May, 1992. (but not before another set of major illnesses struck. In March, I began having "atypical" siezures, experienced heart arrythmias, and vision changes to the point that I could no longer work. In April, 1992, I developed cellulitis in my face and neck that was so bad so quickly, that I had to be hospitalized.) >

>I am angry that I am sick, disfigured and disabled, when this did not have to happen. From the reports and "internal document studies" that I have read, it seems crystal clear to me that the manufacturers of my implants, Dow Corning, knew that they were putting a dangerous and harmful product on the market and ultimately in my body. Why did they do this? And why are our country's legal and regulatory officials dragging their feet on making all implant manufacturers accountable for the devastation and deaths of so many previously healthy young women?! If an individual had harmed me the way the manufacturer of my implants have, that individual would be in jail for a very long time. But because a corporation has done this, no punishment or accountability has taken place. And what is worse, because there are so many thousands that have been injured so badly that it's causing a "traffic jam" in the courts, the laws that used to be in place to protect the injured are being changed, dulled or completely eliminated. >

>I am ashamed that my wonderful country has allowed this to happen to me and to hundreds of thousands of others. Do our governing officials not realize the ultimate cost of this holocaust? Healthy women are caused to sicken and die long before their time. They can no longer work or keep a home. Loads are transfered to husbands, many of whom, weakened by trying to carry the weight of their own role, cannot also carry the role of wife and second income. Outcome? Divorce. Destruction of families. Destitution for women too sick to work and no monies for insurance or doctors. Many children born after implants suffer a variety of auto-immune health problems and fatigue, so very similar to their mothers. >

>comments = I had silicone gel implants for 20 years (1973-1993). In that time I became physically and mentally debilitated to the extent that I could no longer work, had no energy for activities of daily living and was considering taking antidepressant medication because I had lost all hope that I would get better. The silicone gel had leaked, and was still in my body. Last year (September '96) my sister introduced me to the most amazing whole food on the planet...algae! I am now feeling alive again and have a mission in my life. I want to share the algae product with my silicone survivor sisters! I would love to talk to you. I am leaving on a hiking trip to Europe in May, but please write my email address if you are interested in hearing my algae story. I will respond to all interested women. >comments = I am concerned about what to believe. I have had implants for 18 years and never have had any problems; however, over the last couple years they have become hardened or possibly encapsulated. I am embarrassed to hug others too tightly. Now that I am getting older (52) the implants are still in place and hard but the "real me" is drooping and it doesn't look very attractive. Imagine being 90 years how I will look. But how I look is no longer my main concern. I have had various aches and pains but nothing like what I have read in these passages. Going through menapause and being in one's 50s is reason enough to have various aches and pains. Should I have them out as a preventative measure? Is it certain that they will eventually cause me grave illness, etc. I need to know what it costs and what is involved in having the implants completely removed. Does the hardening of the implants indicate that they need to come out and that there is a possiblity that they will rupture? What does it cost to have the surgery and where in the Oregon area is there a surgeon who might be recommended for this procedure? My comments may be made public but my name and other information shown above is to be left confidential. Thank you. > >

>comments = I sincerely appreciate this, and, other websites that offer information & support for silicone implant survivors such as myself AND, my daughter - who has many of the same symptoms and debilitating pain, that I do. I breastfed her with the assurance from my doctors that it was "perfectly safe" to do so, and, afterwards, when it was far too late to prevent the damage, I learned that one of those "perfectly safe implants (that Dow Corning promised would last me my lifetime!)", had been ruptured as my baby girl innocently was being fed!!! I just saw a segment of "E.T." on tv this week, which featured a number of 'swimsuit' models who were carelessly insisting on having silicone breast implants, in spite of all that's being discovered about the horrible risks involved - because they beleive these are imperative to their 'looks' and subsequent 'careers'. To those misguided women, I would like to say LISTEN to someone who has been right where you aspire to be - spare your bodies, your health, AND, your lives, and spare yourselves from being "the STAR of your own personal nightmare"! I am a former swimsuit model, renowned personal trainer, and successful athlete, who was featured in, and on, the cover of, many magazines (such as "SHAPE"). Please, get that poisen out of your lovely, healthy young bodies before it destroys you, as silicone breast implants have destroyed me, and my promising career. If you could only see my portfolio, and pictures of how lovely, healthy, vibrant, and athleticly fit I once was, compared to what devestating, chronic illness AND PAIN, has done to me in only a few short years - because of a ruptured silicone implant. THINK AGAIN!!...if you believe it won't or can't happen to you, and THINK AGAIN!...if you believe your 'career' will be enhanced, when, after a few years, you become horribly ill, from the 30 or 40 poisenous chemicals in your implants,as they begin to break down your bodies defense mechanisms! HOW MANY MODELLING JOBS will come your way, when you are in bed from feve > >

>comments = I think it's horribly sad that there is so much that women >damage their bodies with just to try to please society. Women >suffer low self esteem when their bodies do not match the "ideal" >image that is fed to us everyday through the media. It even starts >in childhood with impossibly porportioned cartoons and Barbie. >The avg. woman is 5'4", 145 lbs. The avg. model is 5'10", 110lbs. >4-5 million women and girls suffer from an eating disorder. >One in ten anorexics will die either from medical complications >or suicide trying to become society's ideal woman. >I think the saddest part of the whole thing is that the ideal that >the women are trying to attain is based on looks. comments = Breast implants are a product of the media's attempt to shape into our minds the idea of the perfect, unrealistic and completely false woman. Another man driven idea. I am a NATURAL woman with my own chest that God gave me. My boyfriend loves me and more importantly; I love myself. I think all women need to take a look in the mirror and embrace what they see. We need to tell the media to take a hike and instead take a stand for ourselves and our bodies.
